Mobile money accounts in Tanzania have more than doubled over five years, rising 116% from 35.3 million in 2021 to 76.5 million by the end of 2025, according to data from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority. Transaction volumes grew 68% over the same period, climbing from 3.75 billion to 6.31 billion transactions.
The figures show mobile money becoming deeply embedded in Tanzania's financial infrastructure. Of the country's 105.8 million active SIM cards, 72% are now registered for mobile money services. Growth accelerated in the final quarter of 2025, with subscriptions rising 6.7% from 71.7 million to 76.5 million and transactions increasing 11% from 598.9 million to 664.7 million in just three months.
Vodacom's M-Pesa dominates the market with 41.2% share, followed by Mixx at 29.5%, Airtel at 18.5%, and Halotel's Halopesa at 10%. TTCL's Tpesa and Azam Pesa hold a combined 0.8%. Mixx leads in per-user engagement, recording the highest average transactions per subscription at 10.30.
For Tanzania's financial sector, the milestone underscores how mobile money has become the primary channel for financial inclusion, far outpacing traditional bank account penetration. The Bank of Tanzania and the TCRA jointly regulate the sector through a memorandum of cooperation, reflecting its systemic importance. With mobile money services first introduced in Tanzania in 2007, the country has emerged as one of the continent's most digitally active payments markets — a trajectory that continues to attract investment from both telecom operators and fintech startups seeking to build on top of the mobile money rails.
