Portwest, the Ireland-based safety wear manufacturer, has opened an $8.8 million apparel manufacturing facility in Dar es Salaam, producing occupational safety garments for high-risk industries including construction, oil and gas, and manufacturing. The plant began operations this week with more than 200 workers on the floor.
Founded in 1904, Portwest operates in more than 150 countries with a global workforce exceeding 5,500 employees. The Dar es Salaam facility represents its latest expansion into African manufacturing, with projected capacity to create 1,000 direct jobs as production scales. Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade Denis Londo said the facility demonstrates confidence in Tanzania's manufacturing environment and the government's commitment to building a robust industrial sector.
The investment comes as rising demand for personal protective equipment across Africa — driven by stricter workplace safety standards, rapid construction growth, and expanding energy projects — creates a substantial market opportunity. Tanzania's own infrastructure pipeline, including the Standard Gauge Railway, the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, and emerging oil and gas developments, generates consistent domestic demand for the types of safety garments Portwest produces.
The plant is expected to generate broader economic benefits through supply chain linkages, logistics services, and skills transfer in industrial garment manufacturing. Local production aims to reduce Tanzania's reliance on imported PPE while enhancing export competitiveness within the East African Community framework.
For Tanzania's manufacturing ambitions, the Portwest investment represents tangible progress. The country has sought to move beyond raw material exports and attract value-added manufacturing, particularly in sectors where domestic demand provides a reliable market base. A purpose-built facility from an established global manufacturer suggests the operating environment is becoming viable for this type of mid-scale industrial investment.
