Tanzania has completed construction of 758 4G towers, extending connectivity to more than 1,400 villages and approximately 8.5 million people who previously lacked reliable communication services, Communications and Information Technology Minister Angellah Kairuki said.

Kairuki disclosed the figures during the Seventh World Telecommunication/ICT Policy Forum, WTPF-26, in Nassau, Bahamas, according to Daily News. She said the government is working to expand inclusive, affordable, secure and reliable communications services while strengthening digital skills under the National Development Vision 2050 and the National Digital Economy Strategy 2024-2034.

The government has also established 800 Digital Clubs to develop ICT skills, facilitated Wi-Fi access at 100 public locations and established computer laboratories in 250 public schools. Kairuki said the initiatives have taken account of students with disabilities, so technology access is not limited to one group of users.

At the forum, Tanzania proposed three priorities for communications and information technology development: expanding access to affordable services, strengthening digital skills and artificial intelligence use, and developing secure and inclusive digital infrastructure that protects personal data.

For businesses, the tower rollout matters because mobile connectivity remains the practical base layer for digital commerce, mobile money, online services and market information in many parts of Tanzania. Extending 4G coverage into previously underserved villages can widen the addressable market for telecom operators, fintech providers, digital public services and small enterprises that rely on phone-based transactions.

The next commercial test is usage, not only coverage. More towers and public access points can reduce the physical barrier to connectivity, but the impact for businesses will depend on affordability, service reliability and whether newly connected users can turn access into productive economic activity.
