Tanzania's economy is projected to grow by 6.2% in 2026, placing the country among the top three performers in the East African Community, according to the World Bank's latest Global Economic Prospects report. Only Rwanda, at 7.2%, is expected to grow faster in the bloc.
Key Points
- GDP growth forecast at 6.2% for 2026, up from an estimated 6.0% in 2025
- Tanzania currently the 2nd fastest growing EAC economy behind Rwanda
- Economy currently estimated at $85 billion, targeting $118 billion by 2030
Background
The growth projection is underpinned by strong performance in agriculture, mining, and construction. Tanzania's mining sector recorded explosive growth in 2025, with gold production reaching 10,574 kg—a multi-year high. The sector contributed 15.4% to GDP growth. Meanwhile, inflation has remained contained, averaging 3.5% in Q4 2025, well within the central bank's target range.
What This Means
The positive forecast reinforces investor confidence in Tanzania's economic trajectory. For the private sector, it signals continued opportunities in key growth sectors. The government's Vision 2050 framework aims to leverage this momentum to triple GDP by decade's end, positioning Tanzania as an upper-middle-income economy.
